Integrating Love for Planet and Agency in Climate Education

Climate change is no longer a distant crisis that belongs to the future—or to the pages of a science textbook. In Assam, India, the floods of 2026 submerged villages, affected more than 700,000 people, and forced families to leave behind their homes and livelihoods. In Brazil, the devastating floods of 2024 displaced nearly 680,000 people across Rio Grande do Sul. In Valencia, Spain, torrential rains in the same year turned streets into rivers and claimed more than 200 lives. And this summer, communities across Europe have been confronting extreme heat, drought, and wildfires, with more than 600,000 hectares already burned in 2026. These events may have unfolded thousands of kilometres apart, but for the people experiencing them, they are not abstract climate statistics. They are disrupted schools, flooded homes, lost livelihoods, anxious families, and children learning that the world around them can change in ways they cannot always predict. For this generation, climate change is no longer simply something to learn about; it is something they are learning to live with. 


As educators, parents, community leaders, and advocates, this reality forces us to confront an urgent question: How do we educate the next generation for a world in ecological flux?


For decades, standard curricula have treated climate change as an isolated academic subject. But presenting vast global data without emotional grounding or practical outlets for action produces two undesirable outcomes: intellectual detachment and/or profound climate anxiety.


Climate education must go far beyond informing—it must transform the way learners see, feel, and relate to the world around them. It should nurture a deep sense of love for our planet and agency for change that empowers learners to understand, connect, correct, respond, and act. This calls for a clear guiding philosophy across curricula, workshops, campaigns, capacity building, and community initiatives: moving from merely “Learning About” the planet to “Learning For” the planet. 


Learning About Climate vs. Learning For Climate 


If climate change is increasingly becoming part of the world young people live in, then climate education cannot remain limited to helping them understand the science of what is happening. Traditional environmental education has played an important role in building scientific literacy—helping learners understand greenhouse gases, rising temperatures, biodiversity loss, and the causes and consequences of climate change. But when learning stops at knowledge, something important is missing.


Learning About Climate


“Learning About” often places the learner at a distance from the issue. Climate change becomes something to study, rather than something to experience, question, care about, and respond to. It typically focuses on the transmission of knowledge. 


This can create several limitations:

  • Knowledge without connection: Learners may understand the science but struggle to see how it relates to their own lives, communities, and choices.

  • Consumption without agency: Students become recipients of information rather than investigators who can ask questions, explore problems, and influence what happens around them.

  • Global problems, local disconnect: Climate change is often presented through global statistics and distant crises, while immediate realities—such as urban heat, water scarcity, changing seasons, biodiversity loss, or local waste—remain disconnected from the learning experience.

  • Awareness without a pathway to action: When young people repeatedly encounter the scale and urgency of the climate crisis without meaningful opportunities to respond, awareness can sometimes lead to anxiety, helplessness, or disengagement rather than agency and hope.

Scientific literacy remains essential. Learners need to understand why the climate is changing. But knowing why temperatures are rising does not automatically teach a young person how to operate with agency for change and love for their surroundings and, ultimately, for the planet, work with others, make responsible choices, or contribute to building more resilient communities.


Learning For Climate


“Learning For” approach begins with a different question. Instead of asking only, “What do students need to know about climate change?”, it asks: “Who do we want young people to become in a changing world—and how can education help them get there?”

It is not about replacing scientific knowledge with action. Rather, it is about connecting knowledge with experience, values, relationships, and action.

“Learning For” seeks to help young people develop not only an understanding of the planet, but also a relationship with it—to develop love and curiosity about the planet, empathy for people and ecosystems, the ability to think critically about complex systems, and the confidence to participate in creating solutions.

We see this approach through three interconnected domains:

  1. Cognitive domain: Developing systems thinking, critical inquiry, scientific literacy, and data literacy so learners can understand the causes, consequences, interconnections, and possible responses to climate and ecological challenges.


  2. SEL domain: Cultivating wonder, love for the planet, empathy, care, responsibility, and a sense of belonging—because it is difficult to sustain a commitment to something we have never felt connected to.


  3. Behavioural domain: Creating opportunities for learners to turn understanding and care into meaningful action through problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, design, decision-making, and leadership.


This shift in philosophy, when intentionally designed across interconnected domains, can nurture climate stewards—individuals who not only gain knowledge but also develop a love for the planet and agency for change to define meaningful pathways for contributing to climate solutions. In this way, “Learning For” the planet becomes more than a slogan; it becomes a lived practice that equips young people to act with purpose and responsibility in the face of climate change. 


The Four Dimensions of Learner Development: Integrating Love for Planet and Agency


Love for the Planet and Agency for Change are at the heart of the philosophy. The four dimensions provide the foundation through which these qualities can develop. They are interconnected rather than sequential, and learners may engage with each dimension with different levels of depth, emphasis, and intensity depending on their context, age, interests, and learning needs. 


1. Developing Self

Before learners can seek to change the world, they first need to understand their place within it. This element invites them to examine their values, identities, lifestyle habits, and everyday choices, and to reflect on how these shape their relationship with the natural and social world around them. It moves learners from the passive consumption of information to conscious reflection, helping them recognise how seemingly small choices can create wider ripples—and, in the process, begin and/or take leaps in their journey of personal transformation. 


2. Developing Community

Action is inherently collective. This dimension emphasises building deep relationships—not only with other people but also with the ecosystems that sustain us. Learners begin by cultivating love for their local environments, recognising flora, fauna, and waterways as integral to community life. Driven by their love for the planet, learners come to see themselves and others as agents of change, members of interconnected local, national, and global communities who share responsibility for addressing climate challenges. Through active listening, questioning, negotiating, and collaborating across differences, they develop the capacity to build shared understanding and contribute meaningfully to collective solutions. 


3. Understanding the World

With a grounded sense of self and community, learners step back to examine the bigger picture. Operating with love for the planet, learners investigate the systemic root causes of climate crisis—exploring the intersections of climate science, local governance, history, and economics. Through relevant literature such as city climate action plans, climate action reports, experiences, reflections, reviews, discussions, and case studies, they learn to see climate challenges as dynamic, interconnected systems rather than isolated accidents.


4. Creating Change

This dimension translates knowledge and empathy into practical agency for change. Using design-thinking methodologies, learners identify specific problems in their immediate surroundings, prototype solutions, partner with local stakeholders, and execute real-world projects. They learn to measure their impact, adapt their approaches, and champion lasting institutional change.

Building Hubs of Love and Agency


If we teach climate change merely as a collection of dire warnings and technical definitions, we prepare learners to be passive observers of a degrading world. But when we teach climate change as an invitation to care, innovate, and lead, we give them the tools to shape a better one.

Our ultimate goal should be to make every learning environment a vibrant hub of agency and genuine care for the planet. Love anchors our purpose and builds resilience, while agency drives the work forward. 

Irrespective of whether we are conducting teacher training programs, designing youth curricula, or launching community campaigns, this core philosophy remains unchanged. We are here to help young people fall in love with the Earth—and equip them with the unwavering agency to protect it.
